Your Postpartum Body is Beautiful

After having a baby, many women become self-conscious about their bodies. I’m here to tell you that your postpartum body is beautiful…really. Here’s why:

A mark for every breath you took, every blink, every sleepy yawn.
One for every time you sucked your thumb, waved hello, closed your eyes and slept in the most perfect darkness.
One for every time you had the hiccups. One for every dream you dreamed within me.
It isn’t very pretty anymore. Some may even think it’s ugly. That’s OK.
It was your home. It held you until my arms could, and for that I will always find something beautiful in it.

Your body, the one you look at with hate and disgust. The one you won’t look at because you hate it so much. The one you cover up under multiple layers when you go out because you don’t want anyone to see. The one you refuse to let your partner see. Your body. It carried and sustained life. It brought that life into this world. It is beautiful. Your postpartum body is beautiful. You are beautiful.

Each stretch mark, wiggle of cellulite, and wrinkle of loose skin points the beauty and power of motherhood. These things are temporary. For some, your body will never be the same. For others, it will spring back quickly. Regardless of what happens, your postpartum body is beautiful. Don’t let any one tell you any differently. Don’t tell yourself any differently. Speak positive affirmations to yourself until you believe them. Toss out the negative thoughts that weigh you down. Walk with your head held high with confidence. Enjoy your baby and embrace this new life. Embrace your new body. Embrace the changes that have come. Embrace all that is you. Love your body because, mama, your postpartum body…it is beautiful.

If you need inspiration from other women who have learned their postpartum bodies are beautiful, check out 4th Trimester Bodies. They will be coming to Tampa and Orlando in 2016. I plan on celebrating the beauty of my postpartum body with a 4th Trimester Body photo session. Who’s with me?
