Postpartum Doula vs Nanny

When I talk to people about postpartum doula support, so many respond back, “That’s like a nanny, right?”

Although a nanny is similar, we can do so much more!

A nanny is focused solely on caring for the baby or children in their care. They will occasionally fix the child food or take care of the child’s laundry, but in most cases they do not. They are hired by the parents for the care of their child.

On the other hand, a postpartum doula is hired by the parents to care for the entire family. To take care of the mom and the baby. To ensure the entire family is able to focus on bonding with their new family member without feeling overwhelmed by day-to-day household duties, lack of sleep, or life in general.

Postpartum doulas do that!

Need someone to listen while you talk about your birth? ☑

Need someone to get up with the baby at night, change his diaper, bring him to you for feeding, and then put him back to sleep? ☑

Need someone to run errands for you so you can focus on being home spending time with your new baby? ☑

Need someone to make sure the laundry actually makes it from the washer to the dryer and into the closets and drawers? ☑

Need someone to plan and prepare supper? ☑

Need someone to help you find resources for any postpartum questions or concerns you may have? ☑

Need someone to take care of older siblings while you focus on bonding time with your baby or partner? ☑

Need someone who can anticipate your needs and take care of them even before you ask (not all the time, but often)? ☑

Need someone who can help you feel confident, secure, and knowledgeable about your parenting decisions? ☑

Need someone who won’t judge those decisions and will offer unbiased knowledge when asked? ☑

As you can see, a postpartum doula does a whole lot…and more! She is there for the mom, the baby, and the family. She is there to provide unbiased, judgment-free support from the first moment to the last. She is there for you.
